The High cost of fuel has influenced farmers to convert diesel powered water generators to use liquefied petroleum gas (Gas) when pumping water to irrigate their crops. Mutava Mulyungi, a horticulture farmer in Thitha, Kivou Ward, Mwingi Central subcounty said that the fuel cost was not manageable thus gas was more cost effective for the irrigated agriculture.
CECM for Agriculture and Livestock Dr. Stephen Kimwele urged farmers to adopt new farming technologies and innovations in Agriculture. Transitioning to using gas instead of traditional fuels in their irrigation practices was an encouraging encounter.
He was speaking in Kivou Ward, Mwingi Central Sub-County, during site visits to establish potential areas for collaboration to enhance irrigated agriculture.He emphasized that gas is a more cost-effective alternative, which can significantly reduce the operational expenses associated with irrigated agriculture.
“By adopting gas-powered irrigation systems, farmers can achieve greater economic efficiency and sustainability.”
He further highlighted that this shift could not only lower the cost of production but also contribute to environmentally friendly farming practices with less gas emissions, hence enhancing the overall productivity and profitability of agricultural operations.
Also present was the CECM for Water and Irrigation Mr Peter Nkunda, CO Bretta Mwangangi (Irrigation) Chief of Party Robert Kisyula (STAWI) among other County officials.
