Kitui, July 19, 2024 – Kitui police have arrested five individuals suspected of impersonating officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and harassing government officials. The swift operation followed a distress call from a colleague of the targeted government official.
The incident unfolded when the suspects arrived at the government officer’s home, pretending to be relatives of the detained official. The officer discreetly signaled to the police that she did not know the individuals, leading to their immediate arrest. The suspects are currently held at Kitui Central Police Station and are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday.
The suspects had earlier apprehended an officer from the Kitui County Government under false pretenses, claiming to have evidence of her involvement in corruption. They allegedly arrested the officer at her workplace and escorted her to her home, asserting she had hidden millions of shillings in ill-gotten gains there. A search of the home revealed no such evidence, raising suspicions about their true identities.
Among those arrested is Kyallo Kasee, a popular Kamba Benga musician and leader of the Kalandini Boys Band, who has previously faced similar charges of impersonating an EACC officer. The other suspects include one police officer and three civilians.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent further incidents of impersonation and harassment. This operation highlights the importance of verifying the identities of individuals claiming to be law enforcement or government officials.
