A fierce online exchange has erupted between Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, centering around the controversial impeachment motion targeting Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The clash unfolded in a WhatsApp group, where Governor Mutula questioned why the task of tabling the impeachment motion was given to MP Mutuse.
Governor Mutula is reported to have expressed surprise at the move, prompting a swift and sharp response from the Kibwezi West legislator. MP Mutuse, defending his role, made it clear that the impeachment motion was his own initiative, asserting that he had put significant effort into crafting it.
“I have never wanted to engage you in WhatsApp groups, my Governor. But now that you’ve brought it up, please allow me to inform you that I was not picked to present the motion. This is my motion, and I worked on it conscientiously,” Mutuse fired back.
In his response, Mutuse further questioned why there would be an issue with him, or any other Kamba leader, taking charge of such a significant national issue. He stated: “What problem do you have with me or any other Kamba taking the lead on a national issue? Must we always be followers? I dare to lead; I’m not a coward.”
Mutuse also took the opportunity to hit back at criticism aimed at him by the governor’s supporters, who had allegedly been sharing images highlighting water shortages in Makueni. The MP pointed out that water management is a devolved function, implying that the responsibility falls under the county government, led by Governor Mutula.
“You were not elected to undermine or supervise me and other elected leaders. With respect, sir, focus on delivering your budget to the people of Makueni and stop the sideshows,” Mutuse concluded.
The exchange highlights growing tensions within Kamba leadership, especially around the highly divisive Gachagua impeachment motion, which has stirred both political support and backlash within national and local leadership circles.
