Over 500 farmers gathered in the Kithumula/Kwa Mutonga Ward of Kitui West for a Farmers Field Day, organized by the Catholic Diocese of Kitui under the Christian Aid ‘Climate the Change We Must’ project. This event marked the end of a five-month pilot phase, benefiting 20 farmer groups.
The initiative focused on sustainable agriculture by providing drought-tolerant seeds, water harvesting techniques, and innovative farming methods. Farmers learned about ripping, mulching, kitchen gardening, tree planting, beekeeping, and the use of zai pits. The event also featured representatives from agrochemical companies.
Gladys Kivoto, Kitui Chief Officer for Agriculture and Fisheries, highlighted the importance of sustainable practices for food security and climate resilience. She urged farmers to stay in touch with agricultural extension officers for support.
Participants left the event committed to implementing the sustainable farming techniques they learned, aiming to boost productivity and resilience.
