A political storm is brewing in Kitui County following allegations made by former Kitui South MP and current political advisor to Governor Julius Malombe, Hon. Mwangu Ivuti, that Members of County Assembly (MCAs) have access to funds for road projects in their wards. The claims have been met with sharp criticism, particularly from Ikanga MCA Hon. Cyrus Musyoka, who dismissed them as “careless and misleading.”
Addressing the press, Hon. Musyoka clarified that MCAs do not have any allocated budget or kitty for road grading, opening, or repairs. He emphasized that all road works in Kitui County are handled by the relevant line ministry under the County Government, which allocates resources equitably across the 40 wards.
“There is no single penny that a Member of County Assembly is entitled to for road projects. No such budget vote line exists,” Musyoka stated. “Road grading, opening, and repairs are managed by the county’s line ministry, with each ward allocated 60 kilometers for grading and 10 kilometers for opening.”
The MCA condemned Hon. Ivuti’s remarks, labeling them as “misguiding to the public.” He urged leaders to be responsible in their public statements to avoid creating unnecessary confusion among residents.
Sonko also weighed in on the matter, defending the MCAs, Sonko dismissed the allegations as baseless and clarified that MCAs do not control any development funds, including those for road infrastructure.
The controversy has sparked heated debates among Kitui residents, with some calling for clarity and transparency on how county funds are allocated and utilized.
Governor’s office is yet to respond to the backlash, but political analysts suggest that the incident highlights the growing need for accurate information dissemination in county governance.
As the debate continues, residents remain hopeful that county leaders will focus on delivering development projects rather than engaging in political wrangles.
