Machakos County, October 31, 2024 – In a collaborative move to address water supply issues affecting Kitui and Machakos counties, Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe and Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti inaugurated an ad hoc committee for the Masinga-Kitui Water Supply Project.
The committee’s mandate will be to streamline water distribution between the two counties and prevent future disruptions, ensuring residents have consistent access to this vital resource.
The meeting, held in Machakos County, also saw the attendance of Kitui Water Minister Gitonga Nkunda, Chief Officer Nathan Vungo, KITWASCO Managing Director June Munyao, and Advisor Eng. Muthui. Convening the committee’s sessions will be the two county CECMs for water, along with advisors from each side, who will lead discussions on sustainable water management strategies.
In his remarks, Governor Malombe emphasized the committee’s role in creating both long- and short-term water supply solutions for the residents. “This team has a specific mandate to bridge existing gaps in water usage and to develop an equitable plan for the consumption of Masinga water,” he noted.
Governor Wavinya Ndeti underscored the importance of inter-county cooperation, highlighting the Masinga Dam as a national asset that should benefit neighboring regions. “In line with the South Eastern Kenya Economic Bloc’s vision, we have brought our water departments together to ensure that both Kitui and Machakos gain from the dam’s resources,” she stated.
Both governors affirmed their commitment to harmonious collaboration, focusing on equitable and efficient utilization of the Masinga water resource for the welfare of the two counties.
