Kitui: CECM for Water, Peter Nkunda, Appears Before Implementation Committee to Address Water Issues

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water and Irrigation, Mr. Peter Gitonga Nkunda, together with his Chief Officer, Mr. Nathan Kasamba Vungo, appeared before the County Assembly Committee on Implementation today to provide updates on critical water supply concerns.

The meeting, chaired by Hon. Malinga Munyao (Zombe/Mwitika), focused on the implementation status of requests made by Hon. Cornelius Muthami Ngumbau (MCA Mui) and Hon. Benard Mwangangi Munyasya (MCA Mwingi Central). The statements sought solutions to water shortages in Kitui and Mwingi towns and questioned progress on digital smart meter installations and maintenance programs aimed at reducing non-revenue water losses.

Mr. Nkunda informed the committee that significant steps have been taken to address the issues. He highlighted that the Kitui Water and Sanitation Company (KIMWASCO) has installed three water ATMs at communal hotspots to curb water losses. Additionally, two digital production meters have been installed at the Masinga production plant by KITWASCO, covering 90% of the water supply.

To further reduce costs and enhance efficiency, the ministry has solarized boreholes and sump wells to minimize electricity reliance. On the challenge of low production due to inefficient water pumps at the Masinga and Kiambere intakes, the ministry has initiated procurement for high-efficiency pumps, including two for KIMWASCO and one for KITWASCO.

The CECM also revealed that water service providers have adopted an automated billing system, significantly improving billing accuracy and reducing operational inefficiencies.

Regarding the Kyangulu-Nzinia-Mbuini-Kakeani-Iiani Water Project, Mr. Nkunda clarified that it is under the national government’s jurisdiction, implemented by the Tanathi Water Works Development Agency. The project has faced delays after the contractor was terminated due to poor performance. Plans are in place to retender and complete the project.

The Committee Vice Chairperson, Hon. Malinga Munyao, commended the ministry for its efforts but emphasized the need for timely implementation of solutions to ensure residents have access to reliable and sustainable water services.

The updates mark a step forward in addressing perennial water challenges in Kitui County, with residents now hopeful for improved services.
