In a pioneering move aimed at bolstering disaster response within Kitui County, Deputy Governor Wambua Kanani inaugurated a three-day intensive training session for local divers today.
Conducted in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross, this program marks a crucial step toward enhancing the county’s emergency response capabilities, aligning with Governor Julius Malombe’s vision of safeguarding the Kitui community during natural disasters, particularly with the December rains approaching.
A total of 25 divers, selected from Kitui County’s eight sub-counties and two municipalities, are taking part in this specialized training. These trainees are expected to serve as the first wave of skilled responders, ready to manage water-related emergencies and train other community members on vital first-responder techniques.
The training covers a comprehensive set of skills:
- Aqua rescue techniques, including self-rescue maneuvers, emergency communication, and community preparedness.
-
Scene assessment and coordination management.
-
Safe and effective use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
-
Swimming and survival techniques.
-
Identifying and managing water hazards.
-
Dignified handling of mortal remains.
-
Mental health and psychosocial support for disaster victims and responders.
-
Basic first aid and orientation on Personal Emergency Tools (PET) for water rescue.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor Kanani highlighted the bravery and commitment required for such work. “You are the heartbeat of this program, and the skills you will develop here symbolize not just technical abilities but also a profound spirit of bravery, service, and dedication to our community,” he said.
The training, facilitated by experts from the Kenya Red Cross, will include both theoretical and practical sessions, with hands-on exercises held at Kalundu Eco Park Dam. Participants will gain critical insights into real-world rescue scenarios, empowering them to act decisively during emergencies.
The initiative is coordinated by Kitui County’s Department of Performance Management, Disaster, and Emergency Services under the leadership of CO Francisca Kyui. Residents are advised to stay clear of flooded rivers and are urged to promptly report any emergencies to local authorities or decentralized units for quick action.
This timely program underscores Kitui County’s commitment to community safety and resilience.
