The Kitui County government, in partnership with the National government, has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the long-standing border conflict between Kitui and Tana River counties.
This initiative, aimed at ensuring peace and security, was highlighted during a public baraza held at Sosoma Market in Nguni Ward.Peter Nkunda, Kitui’s Minister for Water and Irrigation and County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of departments under the Office of the Governor, led the discussions, which focused on key security and development projects in the region.
One of the primary concerns raised was the delay in the construction of the Katumba Police Station, a critical facility proposed for the border area between the two counties. The station’s construction has been hampered by ongoing insecurity due to the unresolved border dispute.
Minister Nkunda assured the local community that Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe is dedicated to addressing these challenges. He emphasized that the county government is working closely with the national government to ensure the timely completion of the Katumba Police Station, as well as seven other security posts currently in progress along the Kitui-Tana River boundary.
“These stations will significantly improve security in the region,” Nkunda stated, adding that Kitui County’s territorial boundaries will be safeguarded through lawful processes. He urged the residents to maintain peace and unity as authorities work towards a peaceful resolution of the border issues.
In addition to security measures, the minister also provided updates on the Kyalamoko water supply project, which is expected to improve access to clean water in the region. The project, currently extending from Tivai to Makyui, will soon be expanded to Kyange and Myuuni markets, benefiting more residents in the ward.
Nguni Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), Hon. Jeremiah Mutua, lauded Governor Malombe’s leadership and his administration’s efforts to enhance security through the construction of modern police stations. He also acknowledged the governor’s development initiatives in the area over the past two years.
The baraza was attended by several key officials, including Kitui Chief Officer for Decentralized Units, Stephen Salee, Nguni Assistant County Commissioner, Ali Chireya, and Governor’s Policy Advisor, Hon. Jefferson Kiruru, among other senior leaders from both county and national governments.
The construction of the Katumba Police Station and related security infrastructure is seen as a crucial step in stabilizing the volatile border region and ensuring lasting peace between the Kitui and Tana River communities.
