Kitui Farmers Innovate by Switching to Gas for Irrigation

Mwingi Central, June 17, 2024 — Farmers in Mwingi Central Subcounty are turning to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a cost-effective alternative to diesel for powering water pumps in irrigation. This innovative approach is driven by the high cost of fuel, which has made traditional diesel-powered water generators financially unsustainable for many farmers.

Mutava Mulyungi, a horticulture farmer in Thitha, Kivou Ward, shared that switching to gas has significantly reduced his operational costs, making irrigated agriculture more viable. “The fuel cost was not manageable, but gas is more cost-effective for irrigating our crops,” said Mulyungi.

During a visit to Kivou Ward, Dr. Stephen Kimwele, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture and Livestock, encouraged farmers to adopt new farming technologies and innovations. He praised the transition to gas-powered irrigation as a positive development.

“Gas is a more cost-effective alternative, which can significantly reduce the operational expenses associated with irrigated agriculture,” Dr. Kimwele stated. “By adopting gas-powered irrigation systems, farmers can achieve greater economic efficiency and sustainability.”

He also highlighted the environmental benefits of this shift, noting that gas emits fewer pollutants compared to diesel, contributing to more environmentally friendly farming practices. This change is expected to enhance the overall productivity and profitability of agricultural operations in the region.

The visit, aimed at exploring potential collaboration areas to enhance irrigated agriculture, was attended by several county officials, including CECM for Water and Irrigation Mr. Peter Nkunda, Chief Officer Bretta Mwangangi (Irrigation), and Chief of Party Robert Kisyula (STAWI).

As farmers in Mwingi Central continue to innovate, the adoption of gas for irrigation exemplifies how practical solutions can drive sustainable agricultural development in the face of rising fuel costs.
