Kitui Governor Flags Off 100 Water Tanks to Combat Water Shortages in Kitui South

Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe today flagged off 100 water tanks, each with a capacity of 10,000 liters, for distribution to schools and churches in Kitui South Sub-County. This initiative aims to alleviate the pressing water shortages in the region, particularly during the ongoing dry season.

The flag-off ceremony took place shortly after a significant signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the County Government of Kitui and the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK). The MoU formalizes a collaborative agreement between the two entities, aimed at jointly implementing development programs in areas such as agriculture, water, tourism, health, culture, and social services.

During the ceremony, Governor Malombe emphasized the county’s commitment to addressing water scarcity and promoting sustainable solutions for the community. He highlighted the importance of partnerships like the one with NCCK in driving transformative change in Kitui’s rural areas.

The NCCK, which is currently spearheading a climate change program in Athi Ward under the banner of “Nature-Based Solutions,” is focusing on water harvesting initiatives such as the construction of sand dams and earth dams. This program also includes the distribution of water tanks to local institutions like schools and churches, reinforcing efforts to address climate change and improve water access.

Rev. Canon Chris Kinyanjui led the NCCK team in the MoU signing, which also saw the participation of notable stakeholders including Rachael Kigame, the Country Director for Help A Child, and Edwin Onyancha of Dorcas Africa AID International.

These efforts mark a new phase in the ongoing collaboration between religious organizations and the Kitui County Government, aiming for sustainable development across multiple sectors to uplift local communities.
