Kitui South Nears Water Security as Kangu Kangu Water Project Progresses

Under the determined leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Makau Malombe, EGH, Kitui South is on the brink of achieving water security through the expansive Kangu Kangu Water Tank and Pipeline Extension. This vital project, funded by the County Government of Kitui in partnership with World Vision, aims to address the persistent water shortages that have affected the region for years.

The project, which sources water from River Athi, involves the construction of nine water kiosks with tanks and two additional masonry water tanks to store and distribute clean water.

A combined 30-kilometer pipeline, stretching from Mutomo to the communities of Mathima and Kiati, is complete, providing a reliable water supply to thousands of residents.

Governor Malombe has emphasized that this project is about more than just water—it’s about improving the quality of life in Kitui South. “This initiative is part of our long-term vision to provide sustainable solutions for the people of Kitui.

Access to clean water will not only boost health and hygiene but will also empower local farmers and entrepreneurs,” said Governor Malombe.

The water kiosks, strategically placed across the region, will make it easier for residents to access safe water without having to travel long distances, significantly reducing the daily burden for many families.

The construction of two large masonry water tanks ensures that the supply will be stable even during periods of high demand, helping the region cope with drought and water shortages.

Residents in Mathima, Kiati, and the surrounding areas have welcomed the project, acknowledging its potential to transform lives. “This pipeline will save us time and energy. We used to walk for kilometers to fetch water. Now, clean water will be right at our doorstep,” said a local resident from Mathima.

The 30 kilometers of pipeline from Mutomo to Mathima and Kiati will ensure a continuous flow of water, boosting agriculture and livestock activities in the region. With the Kangu Kangu Water Scheme nearing completion, Kitui South is set to witness a new era of water security, improving both the social and economic landscape of the area.

The project is part of a broader effort by the County Government of Kitui to invest in sustainable water solutions and mitigate the challenges of climate change, ensuring that the people of Kitui can rely on a steady and clean water supply for years to come.
