Kitui Women Representative Irene Kasalu Criticized for Dormancy in Parliament

Kitui Women Representative, Hon. Irene Kasalu, has once again come under fire for her lack of activity in the National Assembly. According to the latest report by Mzalendo, a parliamentary watchdog, Hon. Kasalu has been listed among the Members of Parliament who did not contribute to debates in the House. This is not the first time she has faced criticism for her dormancy, as similar concerns were raised in previous years.

Residents and political observers have expressed frustration over her performance, arguing that her silence in Parliament undermines the advocacy and representation needed for the people of Kitui. Many have questioned her ability to effectively compete against vocal leaders such as Hon. Charles Mulu Wa Makali and Hon. Enock Wambua, both of whom are known for their active participation in parliamentary proceedings and their vibrant engagements outside the chambers.

“How does she plan to face Wiper Party stalwarts like Mulu Wa Makali and Enock Wambua during the primaries if she remains so disengaged?” a Kitui resident lamented. “Our county deserves a representative who will boldly articulate issues affecting us, both in Parliament and in public forums.”

Critics have also accused Hon. Kasalu of being overly reliant on Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, often accompanying him on political tours without demonstrating tangible outcomes for her constituency.

The pressure is mounting for Hon. Kasalu to change her approach and prioritize effective representation of Kitui County residents. As the next election cycle approaches, political analysts predict a tough battle in the Wiper Party primaries, with her challengers capitalizing on her perceived inactivity.

Efforts to reach Hon. Kasalu for comment on the Mzalendo report and the criticisms leveled against her were unsuccessful by the time of publication.
