The newly constructed Kona Kaliti Police Station, located along the Kitui-Tana River border, remains unused and unstaffed, raising concerns among local residents and leaders about border security.
Constructed through a partnership between the County Government of Kitui and the National Police Service, the facility was expected to enhance security in the region, which has long been plagued by cross-border insecurity, including livestock theft and banditry.
However, despite its completion, the station has yet to be operationalized, leaving it vulnerable to neglect and disrepair.Speaking on the matter, local leaders have called for urgent action to staff the facility, emphasizing its strategic importance in securing Kitui South.
“The station, which stands as a significant investment for the safety of our people, is now lying idle like ruins. This is unacceptable,” said a local community representative.
Residents living near the border have also expressed their frustration, highlighting the station’s potential to provide timely responses to security threats. “We face security challenges every day. This police station could make a huge difference, but it’s just standing there, unused,” said a resident. The locals has urged the National Police Service to expedite the deployment of officers to the station. Security analysts argue that operationalizing Kona Kaliti Police Station would not only deter criminal activities but also build public confidence in government efforts to safeguard lives and property in border areas.
The call to action remains urgent, with residents hoping that the relevant authorities will act swiftly to make the station functional and fulfill its intended purpose of ensuring peace and security along the volatile Kitui-Tana River border.
