Police have apprehended Brian Magare, a middle-aged man accused of attacking worshippers with a knife at Deliverance Church International, injuring three individuals, including a senior police officer. The incident occurred on Sunday during a sermon by Reverend Peter Rotich.
Magare reportedly entered the church wearing a mask and sunglasses, appearing suspicious to attendees. He rushed towards the pulpit but was intercepted by church orderlies and Isaac Kimwele, the Kisii Central Sub-County Police Boss, who was present as a worshipper. During the confrontation, Magare allegedly stabbed Simon Onditi, a church official, in the arm before attempting to flee.
Police officers swiftly arrested Magare and detained him at Kisii Central Police Station. Kisii County Police Commander Charles Kases stated that the suspect will be presented in court after investigations are completed. He added that the motive for the attack remains unknown.
Commander Kases visited the injured victims at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital to assess their condition. He explained that officers had been deployed at the church for security reasons at the request of its management.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is now handling the case, working to determine the motive behind the attack.
