On Tuesday 28th May ,2024 – The county Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in partnership with the Cereal Growers Association ( CGA), Alliance for Green Revolution Africa (AGRA) and IKEA Foundation held a farmers field day to sensitize farmers on ways to improve productivity and how to add value in their farming.
The event, which brought together more than 400 farmers and which was held at a village based advisor farm in Kithumula/Kwa Mutonga Ward provided an opportunity for farmers to learn sustainable farming practices among them ripping, mulching, Zai pits and Basins among others alongside providing an opportunity for various exhibitors to showcase their different products.
While addressing farmers, Kitui County Executive for Agriculture and Livestock Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele termed the event as an eye opener for farmers saying Agriculture is the greatest employer in urban and rural areas
He emphasized the need for farmers to practice Climate Smart Agriculture saying it will help build their resilience to increase yields and produce more.He further reiterated Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s commitment to training and capacity builds the youth to venture into agricultural activities to better their lives.
“We are training 280 youth agri prenuers to help farmers in Agriculture extension services” he said.The area MCA Mr. Paul Maluki urged farmers to embrace the new farming technologies saying they are life changing “This will serve to increase yields and ensure food security” he said.
The CECM was flanked by his Counterparts, John Mwendandu ( Environment) and Fredrick Kimanga (Lands).
