In a landmark meeting today, His Excellency President William Samoei Ruto visited former President Uhuru Kenyatta at his family home in Gatundu. The two leaders engaged in a wide-ranging discussion on critical national and regional matters, underscoring the importance of collaboration and unity in addressing Kenya’s development agenda.
During the meeting, President Ruto praised former President Kenyatta for his statesmanship, particularly in ensuring a peaceful transfer of power following the 2022 elections. He acknowledged Kenyatta’s ongoing support for national progress and his efforts to foster cooperation among leaders.
The leaders noted the challenging global economic environment, marked by the aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, volatile currency markets, and a tough macroeconomic climate. They highlighted Kenya’s strides in reducing inflation, lowering food prices, stabilizing the shilling, and cutting interest rates as signs of recovery and resilience.
President Ruto commended Kenyatta’s contributions to laying a strong foundation for the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which focuses on agriculture, universal health coverage, affordable housing, and infrastructure development. Both leaders emphasized the need to accelerate these programs to enhance household incomes and create opportunities for all Kenyans.
The discussion also touched on fostering unity and inclusivity. The leaders stressed the importance of cultivating a harmonious working relationship among all stakeholders, including the three arms of government, religious leaders, civil society, and international partners, to ensure stability and progress.
On governance, the two called for the swift resolution of court disputes concerning the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) selection panel, to enable the appointment of new commissioners. They also expressed their support for Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga’s candidacy for Chair of the African Union Commission, urging national and international backing for his bid.
Regionally, President Ruto lauded Kenyatta’s continued role in promoting peace and security within the East African Community through diplomatic efforts and peace-building initiatives. Both leaders reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to fostering regional stability and resolving conflicts.
As the festive season approaches, the leaders extended their warm wishes to all Kenyans, urging unity and patriotism as the country moves forward. They also pledged to maintain regular engagements on matters of national importance, signaling a new chapter of collaboration in Kenyan leadership.
