A group of women from Kitui County is calling for the arrest of former Cabinet Secretary (CS) Penina Malonza over allegations that she might have misappropriated their Ksh 8 million. The funds were raised earlier this year during a women’s sacco funds drive held at the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) in Kitui town.
The event, attended by former CSs Simon Chelugui and Penina Malonza, was intended to support women’s empowerment initiatives as part of the Kenya Kwanza government’s agenda.
According to the women, the funds drive was meant to benefit over 2,000 women’s groups, each of which was supposed to receive a water tank valued at 10,000 litres. However, the women claim they have been kept in the dark by Officials who are friends to hon Malonza regarding the whereabouts of the money since the event.
Speaking to TCD DIGITAL, former CS Penina Malonza acknowledged her presence at the event alongside former colleague Simon Chelugui but denied any involvement in the embezzlement of the funds. Malonza stated that she does not manage the day-to-day operations of kitui women’s saccos and emphasized that it is up to those saccos officials to decide how to use the funds.
The concerned women are now urging President William Ruto to intervene and help them recover the missing funds, expressing their frustration and disappointment at the lack of transparency following the funds.
