A group of 158 residents from Mwingi has filed a lawsuit against Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the Kitui County Government, and eight other parties.
The plaintiffs claim the respondents have failed to prevent environmental degradation caused by uncontrolled sand harvesting in the region. The residents argue that the ongoing sand extraction has severely impacted local ecosystems, leading to water shortages, soil erosion, and destruction of riverbeds.
They are seeking legal action to halt the activity and ensure environmental protection measures are enforced.
