Agriculture Officers Visit Model Farm in Katheka to Promote Smart Farming Practices

Date:

Agriculture officers from the County Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock today visited Evalyne Kitavi’s farm in Katheka village, Kauwi Ward, Kitui West Sub-County, as part of their field outreach and Sensitization on the mainstreaming of cross-cutting issues in agriculture.

The visit, led by the Director for Agriculture Francis Kitoo aimed to provide technical support and promote sustainable farming practices to the farmer.

Evalyne’s irrigated, solar-powered farm, practices semi-intensive mixed farming with a variety of crops, vegetables, fruits, pulses, cereals and a well-established beekeeping enterprise. Her first honey harvest in March yielded 80kg.

The Officers recommended improved crop spacing, integrated pest management, and preparation for future dairy farming.
The farmer was advised to practice integrated pest management (IPM) so as to manage major pests such as thrips, aphids, whiteflies, leaf miners and mites. Emphasis was made on timely and proper pruning of the fruit trees.

The farm has a ready market for its produce, making it a shining example of sustainable agriculture in the region.
