Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering farmers and enhancing commercialization of livestock products as a pathway to economic growth.
Speaking during a visit to Mwingi Central, Kitui County, PS Mueke emphasized the importance of scaling up production and ensuring the consistent supply of high-quality livestock products. “Empowering farmers to scale up production and consistently supply quality livestock products in sufficient quantities is key to enhancing commercialization, increasing incomes, and driving economic growth,” he said.
As part of the initiative, the PS delivered 100 modern beehives to Mwingi Stars and You & I beekeeping groups. The support aims to boost honey production in the region, tapping into the growing demand for quality honey products both locally and internationally.
Additionally, Mueke introduced a certified honey off-taker who trained the groups on professional honey production, handling, and packaging practices to ensure quality and market readiness.
“We remain steadfast in our mission to strengthen farmer capacities and drive livestock commercialization across the country,” he added.
The move is part of a broader government strategy to support livestock-based livelihoods, especially in arid and semi-arid regions like Kitui, where beekeeping is seen as a viable and climate-resilient enterprise.
