Kitui Governor H.E. Dr. Julius Malombe has assured residents that investigations are underway following the discovery of several human remains in Mwingi Township over the past six weeks. In a statement issued on Thursday, June 11, 2026, the governor said the County Government is working closely with security agencies and other government institutions to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The latest discovery was reported on June 8, 2026, when a multi-agency team visited a site opposite Mwingi Catholic Church near the Mwingi-Garissa Highway after receiving information about suspected shallow graves. The team, operating under court authority, confirmed the existence of four shallow graves and recovered four human remains believed to belong to unidentified persons. Authorities said the identities, ages and causes of death of the deceased have not yet been established and remain under investigation.
The latest recovery follows earlier discoveries within Mwingi Township. On April 28, an unidentified adult male was found dead in the Kanginga area. On May 25, two additional human remains were recovered from the same locality, including the body of a man and a severed female head, while the rest of the female body remains missing. The discoveries bring the total number of human remains recovered in the area to seven.
Governor Malombe said security agencies have secured the scenes and all recovered remains have been documented and transferred for forensic examination. The County Government, in collaboration with the National Police Service and other agencies, is facilitating the transfer of all seven bodies to Nairobi’s City Mortuary for detailed post-mortem and forensic investigations aimed at identifying the victims and establishing the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The governor urged residents to remain calm, avoid speculation and refrain from spreading unverified information that could interfere with investigations. He also called on anyone with information that may assist investigators to report it to the nearest police station or administrative office. Malombe expressed sympathy to families that may ultimately be affected by the tragic discoveries and pledged to keep the public informed as investigations progress.
