Residents of Kitui Rural Sub-County, led by Yatta Kwa Vonza MCA Mark Nding’o, on Wednesday presented a raft of development proposals during a public participation forum on the proposed Kitui County 2026/2027 Annual Budget Estimates held at ACK Kiusyani.
The forum brought together residents from the four wards of Kitui Rural to submit their priorities to the County Assembly as it finalizes the county’s budget. A delegation of MCAs led by Kanyangi MCA Bonface Mukwate Katula, a member of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, received the residents’ views and assured them that their submissions would inform the Assembly’s deliberations.
The residents called for increased investment in key sectors, including infrastructure, water, health, youth empowerment and social protection. Kiusyani Market Traders Chairperson Jackson Musyoki urged the county government to revive the dormant Kwa Kilui stone crusher to create employment and maximize the use of public resources. Participants also appealed for more funding for heavy road grading, expansion of the road opening programme from 10 to 15 kilometres per ward, and an increase in the borehole rehabilitation budget from KSh24 million to KSh40 million to improve access to clean water. They further requested additional funding for Yatta Health Centre, expanded internship opportunities for graduates, establishment of ICT innovation hubs in all sub-counties, enhanced support for Persons with Disabilities, increased allocations for Gender-Based Violence rescue centres, and more resources for the county’s pro-poor programme.
Speaking during the exercise, County Assembly Speaker Hon. Kevin Kinengo Katisya praised residents for actively participating in the budget-making process, describing public participation as a constitutional pillar of accountable governance.
He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring wananchi’s views are reflected in the final budget and backed calls for increased funding for civic education, saying the proposed Civic Education Bill will strengthen public understanding of governance, leadership and citizen participation.
Hon. Katula thanked residents for their constructive proposals and pledged that the Budget and Appropriations Committee would consider their recommendations before tabling its report in the County Assembly
