MATILIKU, August 6, 2026 — Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has rolled out a major economic empowerment programme in Matiliku, distributing income-generating equipment to community groups while unveiling plans for a KSh65 million maternity wing at Matiliku Sub-County Hospital.
Speaking during the empowerment event on Thursday, Governor Mutula announced that the county government, in partnership with the M-Pesa Foundation, will construct the modern maternity wing to improve maternal and child healthcare services in the region.
Under the county’s socio-economic empowerment initiative, six community groups received tents, two groups were issued public address systems, and 64 groups, including churches, benefited from chairs. Other beneficiaries also received cooking utensils to support catering and hospitality businesses.
The county further distributed 268 cooking gas cylinders under its clean cooking programme implemented in collaboration with National Oil. Governor Mutula said the partnership will also establish a gas refilling station in Matiliku to improve access to affordable and clean cooking fuel.
On agriculture, the governor announced that Makueni County has secured 12 new export markets for its mangoes and is working to reopen Middle East markets that were previously closed to the county’s produce. He said the move is expected to boost farmers’ incomes and strengthen the county’s agricultural economy.
Governor Mutula also noted that the proposed construction of the Matiliku High Court will spur economic growth by attracting businesses and improving access to judicial services for residents.
The governor was accompanied by Makueni County Assembly Speaker Douglas Mbilu, Nzaui/Kilili/Kalamba MCA Francis Mutuku, Mbitini MCA Bernard Mutua, Nominated MCA Arbunus Wambua, members of the County Executive Committee, and other county officials.
