Makueni Governor Hon. Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has shared his excitement about the county’s strides in enhancing access to reliable water, calling it “nothing short of a dream come true.” He emphasized the ongoing initiatives to tap into the Athi River’s resources for both domestic and agricultural needs.
Reflecting on the project, Governor Mutula mentioned the construction of a 100,000-litre sump tank at Mavindini, describing it as a challenging yet rewarding endeavor that significantly boosts the county’s water supply efforts. “We did it at Mavindini,” he proudly stated, highlighting that the new infrastructure is set up to cater to both household needs and irrigation.
The Governor explained that the water sourced from the river is treated to ensure it’s safe for domestic use, while a dedicated line has been created specifically for irrigation, allowing residents to access water for their homes and farming activities. In a move towards sustainability, the project also integrates renewable energy, utilizing solar panels to power the pumping system.
This approach not only lessens dependence on traditional electricity but also offers a greener method for transporting water from the river to local communities. Addressing concerns about vandalism, Governor Mutula reassured the public that the county has implemented advanced surveillance cameras to keep an eye on the facilities and deter any potential vandals.
The Athi River initiative is a key part of Makueni’s larger mission to enhance water access, bolster irrigation, and support agricultural production, especially in regions that have historically struggled with water scarcity.
