Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has thrown down the gauntlet to leaders in Kenya’s budding opposition coalition, urging them to quickly name their presidential candidate as we approach the 2027 General Election.
Babu believes that with less than a year left until the elections, the ongoing uncertainty about who will represent the opposition against President William Ruto could seriously undermine their ability to launch a robust national campaign.
His comments have sparked a buzz among opposition supporters, with increasing calls for various parties and leaders to come together and decide who will lead the coalition into the presidential race.
I find myself agreeing with Babu Owino on this point. If the opposition truly aims to unseat President William Ruto, they can’t afford to waste the remaining months debating who their candidate should be. It’s time to identify and announce that candidate.
By unveiling the candidate early, the opposition would allow them ample time to travel across the country, establish a solid campaign framework, connect with different communities, and gather the necessary resources for a competitive presidential run.
This candidate would also have the chance to reach out to Kenyans living abroad and potential supporters worldwide, all while crafting a clear national message that can unify the opposition vote.
For an opposition movement looking to take on an incumbent president, time is of the essence. Procrastination could leave the coalition scrambling to catch up as the ruling party strengthens its networks and campaign strategies.
The message is clear: unite, agree on a single presidential candidate, and kick off the campaign with vigor. If not, the much-touted opposition unity might just turn into empty political talk with little effect at the polls.
As the 2027 election approaches, the opposition now finds itself at a crucial crossroads.
