The Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, on Monday joined His Excellency President William Samoei Ruto for the official groundbreaking ceremony of the Alara Nyambija Livestock Training Institute in Awendo, Migori County.
The new institute is set to become a vital hub for livestock farmers in the region, offering practical training aimed at increasing productivity, enhancing commercialization, and aligning livestock production with market demands.
Speaking at the event, President Ruto emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming the agricultural sector, particularly livestock farming, into a profitable and sustainable economic pillar. He noted that the new training facility will empower farmers with modern skills and technologies, enabling them to transition from subsistence to market-oriented production.
Hon. Mueke lauded the initiative as a major milestone in the livestock development agenda, noting that the training institute will offer hands-on skills and promote innovative farming practices that will improve livelihoods across Migori and the neighboring counties.
The Alara Nyambija Livestock Training Institute is part of the broader national strategy to invest in agricultural training and infrastructure as a means to stimulate rural economies, ensure food security, and create employment opportunities for the youth.
Construction of the institute is expected to commence immediately, with completion scheduled within the next year. Once operational, it will offer specialized courses in animal husbandry, disease control, feed formulation, breeding, and agribusiness management.
Local leaders and residents welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the facility will open new opportunities for the community and spur economic growth in the region.
