BITUMEN UPGRADE OF KAMUWONGO–KANDWIA ROAD GAINS MOMENTUM AS STATE MOVES TO OPEN UP MWINGI NORTH

The Interior Principal Secretary Lymond Omolo has announced significant progress in the upgrading of the Kamuwongo–Kandwia Road, a key infrastructure project launched by President William Samoei Ruto in November 2025. The road, which forms part of the wider B64 corridor, is being upgraded to bitumen standards to close a critical connectivity gap along the Mwingi–Kamuwongo–Ciangera transport corridor.

According to the PS, earthworks and initial grading are currently underway along the 13-kilometre stretch, with most sections already prepared at subgrade level ahead of base construction and asphalt surfacing. Once completed, the road will create a continuous paved link connecting the Thika–Garissa (A3) Highway in Mwingi to the Ena–Chiakariga–Meru (B65) corridor, greatly improving regional connectivity between Kitui, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Meru counties.

The project is expected to unlock economic opportunities in Mwingi North by easing the movement of people, goods and services while opening up access to northern markets and trade routes. Residents and business operators are anticipated to benefit from reduced transport costs, improved access to social services and faster travel times across the region.

At the same time, the government says works are also progressing on the Kyuso–Tseikuru Road (B52), further extending the road connectivity chain deeper into the region. The development is seen as a major breakthrough for Tseikuru, an area that has produced prominent national leaders but has for years struggled with poor road infrastructure and limited accessibility.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has also intensified support for the project by coordinating road safety measures along the corridor. These include traffic management, public awareness campaigns and enforcement initiatives aimed at ensuring safe movement during the construction phase and after completion of the roads.
