Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has commissioned the KSh 17 million Kaki–Kilali Sump Well Water Supply Project in Mui Ward, Mwingi Central, marking a significant step toward addressing water scarcity in the region.
The project is expected to improve access to clean and safe water for residents who have for years grappled with unreliable and distant water sources. It reflects the county government’s broader commitment to investing in essential infrastructure to uplift livelihoods.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Malombe said the project will ease the burden on households, particularly women and children, who often walk long distances in search of water.
The multimillion project is currently serving key institutions including Lundi Primary School, Kyamwenze Secondary School, and Lundi Dispensary, enhancing access to water for both learning and healthcare services.
Implemented under the management of KIMWASCO, the water supply system is designed to ensure sustainable and efficient distribution across the targeted areas.
The infrastructure comprises a submersible pump and related accessories, a rising main pipeline, distribution lines, air valves, washouts, and a 100-cubic-metre masonry water tank.
Additional components include a guard house, solar modules to power the system, a pit latrine, and three water kiosks strategically placed to serve the surrounding community.
The project is currently benefiting an estimated 1,500 residents, providing a reliable water source that is expected to improve hygiene, sanitation, and overall public health.
County officials indicated that plans are underway to extend the pipeline to Kathonzweni Shopping Centre and Mui Dispensary through Musokani, expanding the reach of the project.
Once fully extended, the water supply system is projected to serve up to 1,000 households, significantly transforming water access and supporting socio-economic development in the greater Mui area.
