The transformation of Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui Town into a modern 10,000-seater sports complex is in its final stages, marking a major milestone in the county’s push to invest in talent development and grow the creative economy through sports.

Ongoing works, including stormwater drainage, surface finishing and channeling systems, are nearing completion, paving the way for the facility to be fully operational soon.

The upgraded stadium positions Kitui to tap into Kenya’s rising profile as a regional and continental hub for sports tourism. Once complete, the facility is expected to nurture local talent while attracting high-profile sporting events that will elevate the town’s national visibility.

The complex features reinforced concrete terraces fitted with roofing, alongside a presidential pavilion and exclusive VIP lounges designed to accommodate different categories of spectators. It also boasts a standard football pitch and an eight-lane tartan track built to meet competitive athletics standards.

Security and accessibility have been key considerations in the project, with the construction of an 885-metre perimeter wall, installation of modern security systems and the inclusion of facilities to support persons with disabilities.

Beyond infrastructure, the stadium is projected to unlock professional opportunities for athletes both locally and internationally. It is also expected to stimulate the local economy by boosting small businesses, hospitality and transport services, gradually transforming Kitui into a vibrant hub for sports, unity and socio-economic growth.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has continued to support the project by ensuring a secure environment during construction and laying plans for effective crowd management and safety during future events.
