The Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, has lauded the impact of solar-powered bulk milk coolers in transforming dairy farming, saying the technology is helping farmers cut post-harvest losses, improve milk quality, and access better-paying markets.

Speaking following the handover of the equipment in Tana River County, Mueke noted that the coolers are lowering operational costs while increasing farmers’ incomes and strengthening rural livelihoods.

“I appreciate PS Idris Dokota for presiding over the handover of the milk coolers to dairy farmers at Hola Stadium,” he said.

Mueke reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming the dairy sector through the State Department for Livestock Development. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which seeks to empower farmers, promote value addition, and drive sustainable growth across Kenya’s agricultural value chains.

The deployment of solar-powered cooling systems is expected to significantly reduce milk spoilage in remote areas lacking reliable electricity, unlocking new opportunities for smallholder farmers to participate in formal markets.
