Kitui County Joins Green Run Marathon, Pledges Stronger Action on Water Conservation

By CGoKti-Comm-DprntKitui County Government, through the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Youth, ICT, Sports and Social Services, joined Green Africa Group and other stakeholders for today’s “Run for Rain Kitui Marathon”. The event brought together residents, youth groups, and partners in a vibrant show of unity to champion environmental sustainability and climate action across the county.

Speaking during the run, County Executive Committee Member Ms. Phoebe Mutemi applauded participants for turning up in large numbers and running with purpose. She noted that the marathon was more than a sporting event — it was a call to action. “You have done a job well done today.

Keep up this spirit. When we move together, we can move mountains, and we can make Kitui greener,” she told the crowd at the finish line.Ms. Mutemi reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to providing lasting water solutions for Kitui residents.

She highlighted ongoing investments in Boreholes, Sand Dams, Water Pans, and Piped water projects aimed at reducing the distance residents walk to access clean water. The CECM emphasized that water is the foundation of Health, Agriculture, and Economic Growth in Kitui County and beyond.

With a passionate appeal on conservation, the CECM urged every household to harvest rainwater, conserve water at home, and protect existing sources such as rivers, springs, and wetlands. “Let us not wait for rain.

Let us harvest it when it comes. Let us conserve every drop, and let us protect our water sources because when water is protected, life is protected,” she pleaded with the participants.She added that the County Government of Kitui will collaborate with Green Africa Group, community groups, and partners to scale up water harvesting and conservation programs.

Through tree planting, sand dam construction, and public awareness, Kitui aims to build climate resilience while ensuring no resident is left behind in the journey to water security.Ms Mutemi was joined by Chief Officer Youths, Sports and ICT Nason Kang’alya among other officers.
