The County Government of Kitui, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, today carried out the stocking of 20,000 tilapia fingerlings in four dams across the county as part of ongoing efforts to promote aquaculture and increasing fish production, improving nutrition among local communities, and creating income-generating opportunities for farmers through fish farming.
The exercise was led by the CECM for Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, and the Chief Officer for Agriculture, Gladys Kivoto.
The fingerlings were stocked in Ukuti Dam in Kyangwithya West Ward, Kitui Central Sub-County; Muini Dam in Nzambani Ward, Kitui East Sub-County; Kwa Isiki Dam in Mbitini Ward, Kitui Rural Sub-County; and Matinga Dam in Athi Ward.
Each of the four dams received 4,000 tilapia fingerlings, while farmer groups managing the aquaculture projects benefited from an additional 1,000 fingerlings each.
The initiative is in line with Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s development agenda of promoting climate-smart agriculture and expanding aquaculture as a viable enterprise that can contribute significantly to food security, job creation and economic empowerment for households.
The county government continues to invest in aquaculture infrastructure and farmer capacity building to unlock the sector’s full potential and diversify income sources for farmers.
