A major political development unfolded in Kitui politics after Mwingi Central MP Dr. Gideon Mulyungi publicly endorsed Kitui Woman Representative Dr. Irene Kasalu’s bid for the Kitui governorship in the 2027 General Election.
The endorsement came during a meeting attended by Wiper Party leader and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, where Dr. Mulyungi and Dr. Kasalu publicly reconciled after years of political differences.
The two leaders shook hands before supporters, symbolically burying the hatchet and committing to work together ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Mulyungi declared his support for Dr. Kasalu’s gubernatorial ambition, saying he would rally behind her candidature. He also appealed to the Woman Representative to make the reinstatement of Dr. Mumo at Mwingi Level IV Hospital one of her first priorities should she be elected governor, describing it as part of their agreement.
Kalonzo Musyoka welcomed the reconciliation, describing both Dr. Mulyungi and Dr. Kasalu as experienced leaders who should continue working together for the unity and development of Kitui County.
The endorsement is expected to reshape the political landscape within the Wiper Party, where several leaders are seeking the party’s gubernatorial ticket. Political observers believe the move could influence the ongoing race, which also features Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu and Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua among the leading aspirants.
Dr. Kasalu has intensified her countywide engagement campaign in recent months, visiting wards across Kitui and receiving endorsements from sections of women and youth groups.
She has consistently maintained that she is prepared to face whichever nomination method the Wiper Party adopts to choose its gubernatorial flag bearer, whether through party nominations, a scientific opinion poll, or any other mechanism approved by the party.
Dr. Kasalu has expressed confidence that she can secure the Wiper ticket and contest successfully in the 2027 gubernatorial race.
