Anzauni Clan Leaders Reject Kamba Inclusion in GEMA, Cite Lack of Consultation

By Our Reporter.

The leadership of the Anzauni National Clan has strongly criticized the inclusion of the Kamba community in the Gikuyu, Embu, and Meru Association (GEMA), citing the absence of consultation with the 22 Kamba clans.

Addressing the matter, the clan’s National patron Augustus Kyalo Muli, Chairman Mzee Philip Mulili, and Secretary-General Peter Mulinge stated that the decision to align the Kamba community with GEMA was made unilaterally by a few political leaders and their associates without public participation.

Speaking during a press briefing, Kyalo Muli condemned the move, saying, “There has never been public participation to discuss whether the Kamba community should join GEMA. This decision is politically motivated and serves the interests of a few individuals, not the community as a whole.”

The leaders emphasized that no proper consultations were held with the 22 Kamba clans, a critical step they believe is necessary before making any significant cultural or political decisions.

Mzee Philip Mulili called upon the Kamba community to reject the affiliation with GEMA until an inclusive process is conducted. “We urge all Kamba people to distance themselves from this outfit until proper public consultation is done with all the clans. Our cultural and community integrity must not be compromised for political purposes,” Mulili remarked.

The elders expressed concern over the growing trend of cultural organizations being used as platforms for political agendas, warning that such actions could undermine the unity and autonomy of the Kamba community.

Their statement comes after recent GEMA cultural celebrations, where it was announced that the Kamba community was now part of the association. The announcement has sparked mixed reactions, with many questioning the legitimacy of the process and the motivations behind the move.

The Anzauni clan leaders reiterated the need for respect for cultural institutions and called for transparency and inclusivity in decisions that affect the community.

This controversy highlights the intersection of culture and politics in Kenya, as communities navigate their roles within broader national alliances.
