Dr. Kalua has recently made three visits to the Sombe area this month, witnessing firsthand the alarming extent of environmental destruction caused by rampant charcoal production.
“On one Sunday afternoon, I counted 47 motorcycles transporting charcoal at an average interval of about 4.3 minutes,” Dr. Kalua reported. “I was informed that this is a daily occurrence. I am currently working with a team to identify the lapses in oversight. Unfortunately, it appears that some government officers may be involved in a scheme that facilitates this destruction.”
Dr. Kalua emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to address this issue. “We need to explore sustainable energy alternatives and encourage bankable investments to set up factories for this purpose, rather than resorting to reactionary measures. Your expertise and support in this matter would be greatly appreciated,” he stated.
The Sombe area, once a verdant landscape, is now seeing its resources depleted at an unsustainable rate due to the high demand for charcoal.
