Eight Members of Parliament (MPs) aligned with the Kenya Kwanza coalition from the Ukambani region have announced their support for Interior Cabinet Secretary Professor Kithure Kindiki to replace Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. This comes amid growing tension between Gachagua and President William Ruto, and a looming impeachment motion against the Deputy President.
Speaking exclusively, Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbithuka Mbai confirmed the group’s decision to back Professor Kindiki for the second-highest office in the country. “We have decided to rally behind Interior CS Kindiki as our preferred choice for Deputy President. This is in light of the current tensions between the Deputy President and President Ruto,” Mbai stated.
The cold war between President Ruto and his deputy has escalated in recent weeks, with speculation rife that Gachagua’s influence within the Kenya Kwanza government is waning. Members of Parliament are reportedly drafting an impeachment motion, citing Gachagua’s alleged interference in government operations and a breakdown in relations with the President.
The MPs backing Kindiki believe that the Interior CS is better suited to work alongside President Ruto in driving the Kenya Kwanza agenda. This development could intensify the political rift within the ruling coalition, as Gachagua’s supporters prepare to defend him against the impeachment threat.
The move comes at a critical time as President Ruto’s administration continues to face mounting pressure to deliver on its promises. The potential reshuffle in the top leadership could have significant implications for the stability of the government and its policy implementation going forward.
Political analysts are closely watching these developments, as an impeachment motion against a sitting Deputy President would set a historic precedent in Kenya’s political landscape.
