Governor Malombe Commissions Kitui County Transition Roadmap to Sustainable HIV/TB Program 2023-2027

Kitui, May 23, 2024 – In a significant move towards healthcare autonomy, Governor Dr. Julius Malombe today commissioned the Kitui County Transition Roadmap to a Sustainable HIV/TB Program 2023-2027.

The high-profile event took place at the Governor’s office parking lot at the county headquarters and was attended by a distinguished delegation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and various implementing partners in the HIV and TB sectors led by Dr Jenifer.

This crucial roadmap document outlines the strategies and actions for transitioning the HIV/TB program from US federal funding through the CDC to a county-led, county-owned, and county-funded initiative. The transition marks a pivotal step in ensuring the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of HIV and TB healthcare services in Kitui County.

Governor Malombe, accompanied by Deputy Governor Wambua Kanani, emphasized the county’s commitment to healthcare independence and the critical importance of local ownership in addressing public health challenges. “This roadmap is a testament to our resolve to take charge of our health systems and ensure that the fight against HIV and TB is sustained through locally driven efforts,” stated Governor Malombe.

The event also saw the presence of key county leaders, including Kitui Finance and Revenue Management head Mr. Peter Kilonzo, Environment and Natural Resources Minister Mr. Mwendandu, Roads Minister Eng. Itiko, Chief of Staff Mr. Khalif, and several community health promoters, alongside other government officials. Their participation underscored the collaborative effort and shared responsibility in the transition process.

Representatives from the CDC and implementing partners expressed their support and commitment to assisting Kitui County during this transition phase. They highlighted the importance of building robust local capacities to ensure the continued success of HIV and TB programs beyond the period of external funding.
