Kitui County’s Agriculture and Livestock Executive, Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, welcomed a delegation from the State Department of Livestock Policy today. The delegation, led by Magdalene Kithii, visited Kitui to oversee the progress of the Kenya Livestock Masterplan (KLMP) and assess the ongoing listing of livestock-keeping households—a crucial step in gathering data for improved livestock management and policy formulation.
Dr. Kimwele underscored Kitui County’s dedication to the Masterplan, commending the household listing as an essential foundation for policies that will enhance livestock management, benefit farmers, and uplift local livelihoods. “This exercise will provide us with the data necessary to make informed decisions that directly benefit our livestock keepers and the broader community,” he stated.
The Kenya Livestock Masterplan is a nationwide initiative focused on strengthening the livestock sector through evidence-based policy designed to meet the needs of farmers. In line with Kenya’s overarching strategy to boost productivity in the livestock sector, the Masterplan is especially significant for arid and semi-arid counties like Kitui, where livestock is a critical livelihood.
Also present were Jonathan Kyambi, Chief Officer for Livestock and Apiculture; Josphat Maluki, Director of Livestock; and Dr. Kamonzo, the County Focal Person for KLMP.
