Kitui County Hosts UHC Acts Sensitization Workshop Enters Home stretch

Mutomo, Kitui South Sub-County, August 15, 2024 — The Kitui County Executive’s sensitization workshop on the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Acts of 2023 has entered its second day, with key stakeholders continuing discussions on critical health legislation. The workshop, held in Mutomo, Kitui South Sub-County, is part of a three-day forum aimed at raising awareness and deepening understanding of the newly enacted UHC laws.

Governor Dr. Julius Malombe (EGH) is in attendance, alongside his Deputy Augustine Kanani, County Executive Committee Members (CECMs), the Chief of Staff, Chief Officers, and Advisors to the Governor. The workshop also includes members of the County Assembly’s Health Committee and the County Health Management Team, underscoring the importance of this initiative in shaping the future of healthcare in Kitui County.

Organized by the Council of Governors (CoG) in collaboration with the Kitui Health Ministry and other stakeholders, the workshop is focused on four key pieces of legislation: the Facility Improvement Financing (FIF) Act 2023, the Primary Health Care Act 2023, the Social Health Act 2023, and the Digital Health Act 2023. These laws are seen as vital to advancing the government’s agenda on universal health coverage, with the goal of ensuring quality, accessible, inclusive, and affordable healthcare for all Kenyans.

The workshop is being facilitated by a team of experts from CoG, led by Dr. Mutakha Kangu, a renowned expert in devolution and intergovernmental relations, and Robert Rapando, an expert in health financing. Their insights are expected to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the UHC Acts and how they can be effectively implemented at the county level.

Governor Malombe emphasized the importance of these discussions, stating, “The successful implementation of these laws will be crucial in realizing our vision of universal health coverage in Kitui County. This workshop is a critical step in ensuring that all stakeholders are fully informed and prepared to support this transformative agenda.”

As the workshop progresses, participants are expected to engage in in-depth discussions on the practical implications of the UHC Acts, focusing on how they can be integrated into the county’s health strategy to achieve the broader goal of universal health coverage.
