Kitui Distributes Sacco Certificates to Farmers Under Locust Response Program

Kitui County Government has taken a significant step toward empowering local farmers by distributing Sacco registration certificates to farmer groups as part of the Emergency Locust Response Program (ELRP). The event, which took place in Mwingi Central and Mwingi North Sub Counties, was overseen by Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, Kitui Executive for Agriculture and Livestock.

Speaking at the event in Mwingi Central, Dr. Kimwele highlighted the advantages of collective action among farmers. He stressed that forming organized groups, such as Saccos, provides numerous benefits that individual farmers might not easily access.

“When farmers unite under a Sacco, they gain greater bargaining power, better access to credit facilities, and more opportunities for training and capacity building,” Dr. Kimwele stated.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy by the county government to boost agricultural productivity and improve the livelihoods of farmers in Kitui. Dr. Kimwele noted that the issuance of certificates marks the beginning of a platform where farmers can thrive through shared resources and knowledge.

The establishment of Saccos is expected to enable farmers to pool resources, access better markets, and receive technical support from agricultural experts. Dr. Kimwele encouraged the newly certified groups to remain active and take full advantage of the opportunities presented by their cooperative status.

Ms. Elizabeth Ndanu, interim Chairlady of Mwingi Central Ward Farmers Sacco, expressed her optimism about the future, citing the potential for increased income and stability. “We have struggled for so long as individual farmers. Now, with this Sacco, we can sell our produce collectively, get better prices, and even access loans,” she said.

Dr. Kimwele also reiterated the county administration’s commitment to supporting agriculture as a key driver of the local economy, aligning with Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s development agenda.

The distribution of Sacco certificates represents a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to empower farmers and strengthen the agricultural sector.
