On Tuesday, July 30, 2024 -Kitui Chief Officer for Agriculture and Fisheries, Gladys Kivoto, attended a vibrant Farmers Field Day today in the Kithumula/Kwa Mutonga Ward of Kitui West Sub-county.
The event was organized by the Catholic Diocese of Kitui through the Christian Aid ‘Climate the Change We Must’ project marking the conclusion of its five-month pilot phase in the area.
The initiative has successfully supported 20 farmer groups by providing drought-tolerant seeds, water harvesting techniques, and other sustainable agricultural practices.
Held at a Village-Based Advisor farm in the Kithumula/Kwa Mutonga ward, the event saw the participation of over 500 farmers. It provided them with a platform to learn about various sustainable farming practices such as ripping, mulching, kitchen gardening, tree planting, bee keeping and the use of zai pits and basins. Farmers also had the opportunity to interact with representatives from various agrochemical companies.
In her address, Chief Officer Gladys Kivoto encouraged farmers to maintain close contact with agricultural extension officers for continuous consultation and advice on farming practices.
“This event is an excellent opportunity for farmers to enhance their knowledge and skills in sustainable agriculture, by adopting these practices, we can ensure food security and resilience against climate change,” Kivoto said.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment from the farmers to implement the sustainable farming techniques they had learned for increased Agricultural productivity in the area.
