Kitui Governor Julius Malombe Hosts JICA Officials to Discuss Food and Nutrition Security Project

On 12th September 2024 – Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe (EGH) welcomed officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as part of an ongoing collaboration aimed at improving food and nutrition security in the county.

The delegation, led by Tae Ose, the Project Formulation Advisor, is overseeing the implementation of the five-year project titled Improvement of Food and Nutrition Security through Building Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands in Kenya (IFNuS), which runs from 2022 to 2027.The project takes a multisectoral approach, focusing on several key areas to improve nutrition.

These include the cultivation of vegetables, the promotion of underutilized crops such as Baobab leaves, pasture reseeding, encouraging rabbit meat consumption, and developing a comprehensive database system (CoDusysy) for better management.One of the main objectives of the project is to improve the nutritional status of schoolchildren by integrating vegetables grown by students into their school meal programs.

The initiative is currently being implemented in Kitui Rural, Kitui Central, Kitui South, and Kitui West subcounties.Governor Malombe was joined by Kitui’s County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Dr. Stephen Mbaya, as well as Chief Officers Gladys Kivoto, Jonathan Kyambi, and Pauline Mwania, among other officials.

The IFNuS project aims to build resilience in arid and semi-arid lands, ensuring food security in the face of climate change while improving health outcomes for children and communities in the region.
