The fate of Kitui County Executive Committee Member for Finance, Peter Kilonzo, hangs in the balance as the County Assembly prepares to debate and vote on the special committee report recommending his removal from office.
The report, which was finalized after a thorough investigation by the special committee, outlines allegations of misconduct and inefficiency against the embattled CECM. However, Kilonzo has received a wave of support from a faction of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) who have pledged to oppose the impeachment motion during Tuesday’s session.
Speaking to TCD Digital, several MCAs expressed their dissatisfaction with the findings of the committee report, terming it biased and politically motivated. “We are determined to defeat this impeachment motion because it is not in the best interest of the people of Kitui,” one MCA stated.
The special committee, formed to investigate the claims against Kilonzo, tabled its report earlier this week, with key recommendations for his removal. The report accuses Kilonzo of financial mismanagement, lack of accountability, and failure to implement key fiscal policies.
Despite this, his supporters within the assembly argue that the accusations lack sufficient evidence to warrant his removal. They have vowed to mobilize against the motion when the matter is brought to a vote.
The anticipated debate on Tuesday is expected to be a highly charged session, with both supporters and opponents of the CECM preparing for a showdown. Observers are keenly watching the unfolding events as the decision could have significant implications for Kitui’s financial administration and political landscape.
This is a developing story, and the final decision by the County Assembly will set a precedent for future executive accountability in Kitui County governance.
