KITWASCO Cracks Down on Illegal Water Connections in Kitui Towns

By YOANA KIMWELE

The Kitui Water and Sanitation Company (KITWASCO) has intensified efforts to combat illegal water connections across Kitui towns in a two-day operation aimed at addressing the persistent water shortage in the region.

During the operation, KITWASCO raided several sites suspected of having unauthorized water pipeline connections, vowing to take firm action against offenders. The company’s Managing Director, Madam June, emphasized the need to protect water resources and ensure equitable distribution, announcing that the inspections will continue, particularly along the Masinga pipeline.

“Illegal water connections have contributed significantly to the water challenges in Kitui County. Those found violating the Water Act will face prosecution without exception,” said Madam June.

The water shortage in Kitui has been a long-standing issue, with illegal connections largely attributed to individuals of means. These activities not only deprive residents of much-needed water but also undermine the company’s efforts to expand and maintain infrastructure.

KITWASCO urged residents to report any cases of illegal water connections and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring water access to the county’s residents. The crackdown is expected to enhance the efficiency of water distribution and curb illegal practices that exacerbate water scarcity in the region.

Residents Voice Support

Local residents have welcomed the initiative, calling for stringent measures to ensure those responsible are held accountable. “Water is a basic right, and illegal connections deny us access. We hope this exercise will bring fairness in water distribution,” said a resident of Kitui town.

KITWASCO has assured the public that it is working on long-term solutions to improve water supply across the county.
