On Tuesday, July 23, 2024 – In a step towards sustainable development and climate resilience, Richard John Mwendandu, CECM for Energy, Environment, Climate Change, Forestry, Natural, and Mineral Resources, alongside the Chief Officer for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry David Soi Masai, delivered 200 beehives to beekeepers in Miambani ward, Kitui Central.
The beehives were distributed to Mbite Ngwitike and Miti ni Maisha farmer groupsCECM Richard John Mwendandu’s said the initiative, funded through the World Bank’s Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program, aims to enhance local livelihoods while promoting environmental conservation.
“Today marks a pivotal moment for our community. By providing these 200 beehives, we are not only fostering sustainable honey production but also reinforcing our commitment to environmental conservation. I am confident that these beehives will bring economic benefits to the beekeepers and enhance biodiversity in Kitui Central.
This initiative is a testament to our dedication to achieving a sustainable and resilient future,”remarked CECM Mwendandu.On his part , CO Masai added by saying the distribution of the beehives is a strategic move to boost local livelihoods while ensuring the environment is protected.“We are thrilled to see the tangible outcomes of the FLLoCA program here in Miambani Ward.
Beekeeping is a sustainable practice that benefits not only the beekeepers but also the entire ecosystem. We are proud to support our local communities in adopting such climate-smart practices and look forward to seeing the positive impacts unfold, ” added Mr Masai.Dr Grace Mutua, the Governor’s Advisor on Climate Change, Resilience and Mitigation, and members of the Ward’s Climate Change Planning Team were also in attendance.
