Mwingi West MP is among the many travelers reportedly stranded in New York City due to the ongoing standoff at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi. Speaking exclusively to TCD Digital, the MP, who has been on official duties outside Kenya, expressed frustration over the lack of available flights to Nairobi.
“I’m stranded in New York City, no flights to Nairobi,” said the MP.
The chaos at JKIA follows a strike by airport workers who have downed their tools in protest of the Kenyan government’s plan to lease the management of the airport to Adani Energy Solutions. The proposed deal would see the Indian conglomerate manage the airport for a period of 30 years, a move that has sparked significant backlash from unionized workers.
The industrial action has severely disrupted flight schedules, leaving hundreds of travelers stranded both locally and internationally, with no immediate solution in sight. As the strike continues, many stranded passengers are left anxiously waiting for an update on the resolution of the situation at JKIA.
Government officials have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the strike or potential solutions to the stand-off, which threatens to impact international travel for days.
