Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to defend his right to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election, maintaining that his impeachment does not automatically bar him from seeking elective office as his legal battles continue. Gachagua says he will pursue his case through the Court of Appeal and, if necessary, the Supreme Court, arguing that available legal remedies must be exhausted before his eligibility can be determined.
Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), spoke as opposition leaders continue efforts to forge a united political front ahead of the 2027 elections. He insisted that he remains focused on his presidential ambitions and dismissed suggestions that he should simply help the opposition defeat President William Ruto before handing power to another leader. His position comes amid continued debate over the legal implications of his impeachment and his pending appeal.
Rejecting the description of him as a political “king maker,” Gachagua declared that he intends to be a presidential contender rather than merely influence the choice of another candidate. “Rigathi is not a kingmaker. Gachagua is king,” he said, signalling his determination to remain a central figure in the opposition’s 2027 strategy.
