KITUI, July 29, 2026 — The County Government of Kitui has stepped up efforts to improve road safety and traffic management following the installation of modern traffic lights at the busy AIC Township intersection, ahead of their official commissioning by Governor Dr. Julius Malombe next week.
Through the Ministry of Roads, Public Works and Transport, the Department of Transport and Boda Boda conducted a comprehensive public awareness and sensitisation programme aimed at preparing motorists, boda boda riders, pedestrians and other road users for the new traffic control system.
The forum brought together key stakeholders in the transport sector, including Kitui Municipality officials, the Kitui Base Commander, school administrators, representatives from the Kitui Chamber of Commerce, religious leaders, persons with disabilities (PWDs), County Enforcement officers and members of the media.
Participants received practical demonstrations at the AIC Township intersection before attending a theory session at a hotel in Kitui Town, where officials emphasized the importance of obeying traffic signals to reduce accidents and improve the flow of traffic.
Speaking during the forum, Director Bernard Mulevu of the County Department of Transport and Boda Boda, who represented the Chief Officer for Transport and Boda Boda, said public education is critical to ensuring the new infrastructure delivers its intended benefits.
He urged boda boda operators and transport stakeholders to educate their members on responsible road use, while encouraging schools to teach learners safe road-crossing practices.
The County Government has called on all road users to familiarise themselves with the new traffic signals and fully cooperate with enforcement officers once the system becomes operational.
Kitui Central Sub-County Administrator Gibson Kathoka and senior officers from the Ministry also attended the sensitisation exercise.
The traffic lights are expected to significantly enhance road safety, ease congestion at one of Kitui Town’s busiest intersections and promote orderly movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
The official commissioning of the new traffic light system will be led by Governor Dr. Julius Malombe next week as part of the county’s continued investment in modern transport infrastructure under the “Delivering the Kitui Promise” agenda.
