The inaugural Kitui County Governor’s Cup will culminate in a grand finale at Ithookwe Stadium from August 21 to 23, 2026, bringing together teams that have battled through the grassroots, ward and sub-county stages of the tournament.
Speaking ahead of the finals, County Executive Committee Member for Culture, Gender, Youth, ICT, Sports and Social Services Phoebe Mutemi said the tournament has provided a platform for identifying and nurturing sporting talent from across Kitui County.
Mutemi said scouts, coaches and partners have already taken note of emerging talents, with the county government seeking to create pathways for young players into national leagues, academic scholarships and professional opportunities. She described the competition as more than a battle for trophies, saying it is part of efforts to build the next generation of Kitui sporting stars.
The CECM also highlighted the wider economic and social impact of the tournament, noting that businesses, hotels, traders and boda boda operators have benefited from increased activity at host venues. She added that the competition has promoted peace, unity and county pride while showcasing Kitui’s music, dance, cultural regalia and identity.
Mutemi has called on residents and visitors to turn up in large numbers at Ithookwe Stadium to support the finalists and celebrate local talent. She said the County Government of Kitui remains committed to making the Governor’s Cup an annual event while increasing investment in sports infrastructure, youth programmes and inclusive participation. “Kitui, twende Ithookwe!” she urged.
